Socket & Switch Repair Help for UK Households

Last updated 21 May 2026

Cracked face plate, loose socket, dead switch, scorched outlet — UK sockets and switches usually need replacing rather than repairing. This page connects you with helpers and qualified electricians who can do it safely.

WHO THIS PAGE IS FOR

  • Households with faulty sockets or switches
  • Muslim electricians
  • Helpers offering small electrical jobs

When to stop using a socket immediately

Scorch marks. Buzzing or crackling sounds. A plug that won’t stay in. Heat from the plate when nothing is drawing high power. Any of these and you should stop using the socket and isolate the circuit at the consumer unit until it’s replaced.

Replacement basics

UK domestic sockets are standard 13A, single or double. Replacement face plates fit existing back boxes in most cases. A confident DIYer with the circuit isolated can swap a face plate; anything more involved (deeper back box, new ring main spur, kitchen sockets) needs a Part P registered electrician.

Sourcing parts

Screwfix, Toolstation and Wickes carry the standard 13A single and double sockets. Avoid no-brand sockets from online marketplaces — they’re sometimes counterfeit and don’t meet BS 1363.

4

Close the case and follow up

When the help has landed, mark the case closed. Optional follow-up keeps the door open for further support if needed.
