Fitrana (Zakat al-Fitr) for Muslims in the UK

Last updated 21 May 2026

Fitrana — Zakat al-Fitr — is paid before the Eid prayer at the end of Ramadan. This page explains how to give it through the platform, how to receive it if your family is short, and what current UK guidance on the rate looks like.

WHO THIS PAGE IS FOR

  • Muslims paying Fitrana before Eid al-Fitr
  • Families needing Fitrana support before Eid
  • Donors looking for verified recipients

What is Fitrana?

Fitrana, also called Zakat al-Fitr or Sadaqat al-Fitr, is a charity paid by each Muslim before the Eid al-Fitr prayer at the end of Ramadan. It is paid per head of the household, including children. The intention is twofold: to purify the fasting person and to feed those who would otherwise not eat well on Eid day.

The rate is typically set per person to the cost of a meal’s worth of staple food. UK mosques and the main Muslim charities publish their rate each Ramadan; in recent years it has been around £5–£7 per person. Always check the current year’s figure on a trusted UK source close to Ramadan.

Why Fitrana belongs on this platform

Fitrana must reach a recipient before the Eid prayer to be valid as Fitrana. The Muslims Help Muslims platform is designed for fast, direct giving — donors can search by city and ask the seeker whether they can be reached the same day. This is one of the few times of year when speed of giving really matters, and a community platform fits the timing well.

How to receive Fitrana

Post a clear request for Fitrana support, ideally during the last 10 days of Ramadan. State how many people in the household, the city, and how you can be paid (bank transfer or in-person). Donors will message you. Confirm whether the donor is paying Fitrana or general Sadaqah, as the intention matters to the giver.

How to give Fitrana through the platform

Browse the Financial Relief feed in the last week of Ramadan or filter by Fitrana keywords. Message a recipient, confirm the rate per head you intend to pay, and send funds directly. Many donors prefer to pay multiple smaller amounts to several households so more people benefit on Eid morning.

How Muslims Help Muslims works

1

Submit your request or browse support

Create a free account, pick the category that fits your situation and write a short, honest post. You can stay anonymous in the public listing.

2

The platform connects you with helpers

Helpers and donors browsing your city or category will see the request and message you privately to offer support.

3

Talk it through safely

Agree the help in private messaging. Share only what you need to share — never share bank details publicly.

4

Close the case and follow up

When the help has landed, mark the case closed. Optional follow-up keeps the door open for further support if needed.

Trust and safety

Email verification gates the messaging system, and sensitive details are never shown on the public homepage. You can post anonymously, limit who can contact you, and decide what to share in messages.

Muslims Help Muslims is a connecting platform — we do not hold or distribute donations, and we don’t claim to vet every helper. Always keep bank details out of public posts, take your time when accepting offers, and read our Safety Tips before posting your first request.
