Rent Arrears Help for Muslims in the UK

Last updated 9 June 2026

Rent arrears are one of the most stressful financial situations a household can face. This page explains how the Muslims Help Muslims community can help with a short-term shortfall, and what UK services to contact alongside the platform.

WHO THIS PAGE IS FOR

  • Tenants facing rent arrears
  • Households with a short-term rent shortfall
  • Donors paying Zakat or Sadaqah toward rent

Where the platform fits in

Muslims Help Muslims helps with the human and financial side of arrears: a community donor may cover one or two weeks of rent as Zakat or Sadaqah, a helper may sit with you while you call the landlord, and another may help you fill out a discretionary housing payment (DHP) form for the council.

We do not replace regulated housing advice. For Section 21 notices, court-stage cases, or rent repayment claims, contact Shelter (0808 800 4444), Citizens Advice or a regulated housing solicitor — see Housing Support.

How to ask the community for rent help

Write a specific post: weekly rent amount, current arrears, when the next rent is due, and what has caused the shortfall. Mention if you have already applied for a DHP or asked the landlord for a payment plan. Donors are more likely to support when the request shows the seeker has taken every available step.

If you would like a donor to pay the landlord directly (which many prefer), say so. The donor and landlord can then agree the transfer in a way that satisfies both parties.

Other UK routes to know about

Discretionary Housing Payments are paid by your local council on top of Housing Benefit or Universal Credit housing element. The Household Support Fund, administered through councils, can cover essentials. Some social landlords have hardship funds. A community helper can help you find which of these you’re eligible for in your council area.

Trust and safety

Your tenancy details are private. Share only what donors need to make an informed decision: rough amount, city, situation. Never share your bank details or landlord’s account in a public post — keep that to the private messaging.

Before arrears become an eviction

If you have had a Section 21 or Section 8 notice, get free housing advice quickly — Shelter (0808 800 4444) and your local Citizens Advice can check whether the notice is valid and what your options are. A Discretionary Housing Payment from your council can cover a shortfall if you receive Housing Benefit or the Universal Credit housing element. Community help on this platform works best alongside these routes, not instead of them.
