Muslim Funeral Support in the UK

Last updated 21 May 2026

A death in the family is a moment when the community must show up. This page explains how Muslims Help Muslims can help with the cost of a janazah, finding a mosque to lead the prayer, repatriation logistics, and bereavement support afterwards.

WHO THIS PAGE IS FOR

  • Families facing funeral costs
  • People needing repatriation guidance
  • Mosques and donors offering funeral support

What funeral support looks like

UK Muslim funerals are typically arranged through a mosque or a Muslim funeral director within 24–48 hours of death. Costs vary by city, but a typical janazah in the UK runs into several hundred pounds; repatriation to a home country adds significantly more. Funeral support on the platform usually covers one of these costs as Sadaqah from the community.

Practical steps in the first 24 hours

Contact the local mosque to register the janazah. Contact a Muslim funeral director — most operate 24-hour lines. Inform the GP for the death certificate. Register the death at the register office (an emergency same-day appointment is often available). Apply for the Funeral Expenses Payment if eligible (low-income households can claim through the DWP). A community helper can help with each of these calls.

Where the community can help

Donors often pay the funeral director directly. Mosques sometimes have a hardship fund. A community helper can sit with the family during the paperwork. Long-distance helpers may help with cooking for visitors, school pickups, or simply staying in touch with the family during the first 40 days.

Repatriation

Repatriation is a specialist process. Speak to a Muslim funeral director with international experience; some Muslim-led charities run repatriation schemes for low-income families. Costs are significant, so post early on the platform if community support is part of your plan.

How Muslims Help Muslims works

1

Submit your request or browse support

Create a free account, pick the category that fits your situation and write a short, honest post. You can stay anonymous in the public listing.

2

The platform connects you with helpers

Helpers and donors browsing your city or category will see the request and message you privately to offer support.

3

Talk it through safely

Agree the help in private messaging. Share only what you need to share — never share bank details publicly.

4

Close the case and follow up

When the help has landed, mark the case closed. Optional follow-up keeps the door open for further support if needed.

Trust and safety

Email verification gates the messaging system, and sensitive details are never shown on the public homepage. You can post anonymously, limit who can contact you, and decide what to share in messages.

Muslims Help Muslims is a connecting platform — we do not hold or distribute donations, and we don’t claim to vet every helper. Always keep bank details out of public posts, take your time when accepting offers, and read our Safety Tips before posting your first request.
