Hedge Trimming Help in the UK

Last updated 22 May 2026

Hedges in the UK grow more than people expect — privet, leylandii and hawthorn boundary hedges need a cut twice a year, and ignored ones become a neighbour-dispute waiting to happen. This page connects you with Muslim helpers who can trim safely.

WHO THIS PAGE IS FOR

  • Muslim homeowners with boundary hedges
  • Elderly Muslims who can't safely use a ladder
  • Helpers with garden tools and trimming experience

When to cut what

Privet, beech, hawthorn: two cuts a year — early summer and late summer. Leylandii: light cuts spring and summer, never into bare wood (it doesn't regrow). Conifers: late spring. Avoid all hedge cutting March–August where birds are nesting (Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 protections apply if nesting is active).

Tools and ladder safety

Electric hedge trimmer for hedges up to head-height. Petrol or cordless trimmer with extended reach for tall hedges. Ladder work above 3m really wants a tower or two people for safety — most accidents happen on extension ladders. Helpers may bring their own tools.

Boundary considerations

You can trim back overhanging branches up to your side of the boundary, but you must offer the cuttings back to the neighbour (UK common law). For tall leylandii blocking light, the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003 allows a council complaint after a polite conversation has failed.
