Marriage Guide
Istikhara is the prayer for seeking guidance, and it is most commonly turned to for marriage. It is also the most misunderstood — treated as a dream request, or as a substitute for actually investigating the person. Here is what it is and how to use it.

Salat al-Istikhara is two rak'ah of voluntary prayer followed by a du'a in which you ask Allah, who knows what you do not, to decree the matter for you if it is good for your deen, your life and your outcome — and to turn it away from you and you away from it if it is not, then to decree what is good for you and make you content with it.
That last phrase is the heart of it. You are not asking to be shown a decision. You are asking Allah to bring about the better outcome and to reconcile your heart to it.
Pray two rak'ah of voluntary prayer, avoiding the times at which prayer is disliked. After completing the prayer, recite the du'a of istikhara, mentioning the matter you are deciding on — either at the point in the du'a where the matter is named, or in your own words alongside it if you are still learning the Arabic.
Then proceed. Istikhara is not a pause button; the classical guidance is to act on what appears best to you after praying. If circumstances then close off — the family declines, the information does not check out, you find yourself unable to move forward — that is part of the answer.
Nothing in the prayer promises a dream, a colour, or a feeling. People wait weeks for a sign that was never part of the arrangement, and in the meantime a good proposal passes. Some people are given clear dreams; most are not, and their istikhara is no less answered.
Nor is a strange dream, on its own, a basis for refusing someone. If you have real concerns, investigate them properly — that is the means Allah gave you. Do not outsource a serious decision to an image you half-remember at fajr.
The companion practice to istikhara is istishara — consultation. Speak to people whose judgement you trust: your parents, a knowledgeable and honest friend, your imam. They will see things you cannot from inside the decision.
Between honest investigation, sincere consultation and istikhara, you have done what was asked of you. The outcome after that is Allah's, and the peace of accepting it is much of what the du'a is asking for.
